Most aquarists love the sight of their aquarium but would love to be able to avoid water changes or do them less frequently. Hence, the question is, if you have a large filter that turns over your water volume more than it should, can we then perform fewer water changes?
If you have good filtration, you can go for a month without changing the water(large tanks only), but it is not advised as it can cause old tank syndrome. Good filtration removes waste and debris from the water. It allows only a few extra days (maybe a week) without clean water while still being fish safe.
As an aquarist, we need to understand that sometimes even though something can be done doesn’t mean it should be water change is a prime example, so I will provide arguments for both to do or not to do and let you make an educated decision.
Is It Safe For Fish To Go For A Month Without Clean Water?
Larger aquariums are easier to maintain, and possibly the longer you can go without water changes. For instance, if you have a 20-gallon aquarium and a 75-gallon aquarium, the 20-gallon would have to be changed more frequently than the 75 gallons. This is because the Volume of water will take much longer to pollute than in a smaller aquarium, and water parameters take much longer to alter in large aquariums.
Other factors also come into play. For example, if you have plants, this could absorb much of the harmful gases. Therefore you could go longer without any water changes. Another example will be if you have fish that clean aquariums again. This will help you make fewer changes, but from my experience, it is best not to let the aquarium run for more than 3 weeks (if you have all the above) without clean water
if you don’t have the items listed above, it would be best to continue with changes more regularly, i.e. every 1-2 weeks.
Does A Small Filter Mean More Regular Water Changes?

It will either fill up with waste faster or not be able to cycle the Volume of the tank to ensure the water is in good condition. This is because a small filter can’t handle as much waste as a larger filter. Therefore, it is crucial to change the water often if you have a small filter.
